The practical change
For businesses that want customers to discover them through AI chats, the important technical requirement is not exotic. The site needs to allow the search crawler to reach public, indexable pages.
OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. That turns robots.txt from a background file into part of AI visibility planning.
The same logic applies across the broader search stack:
- Google AI Mode and AI Overviews depend on Google Search indexing and snippet eligibility.

Common problems include:

The content layer still wins
Crawler access is only the door. The content still has to deserve retrieval.
